The Tata Institute of Social Science, (TISS), a multi campus, community engaged Public University, established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work in Mumbai, aimed to create human service professionals to address the issues of unemployment and poverty in the context of the great depression of the 1930s.
School of Skill Education was set up to impart skill education to millions of youth in India by training/skilling them in core industrial relevant job competencies through appropriately designed (market oriented) skill educational programmes with the vision to create sustainable sources of income that would promote better employability, better livelihood, a brighter future and subsequently contribute to the economy of the nation.The curriculum focuses on a holistic education that integrates general/skill knowledge and job-specific skills through a combination of classroom sessions (for general education and domain knowledge) and practical skill training, a unique, distinctive learning/skilling pedagogy of TISS SSE. The on-the-job skill training (OJT) is conducted at the active/leading industries and companies. The internship embedded ‘work while you learn’ training provides the students a meaningful experience in selected skill sectors.
